Description

Ice climbing training advanced mountain school Lechtal Tirol

Many things in mountain sports are complex. Especially when mountaineers enter alpine terrain. And this has its pitfalls in winter. The avalanche situation must be assessed. The time window for completing multi-pitch tours on ice, including ascent and descent, must be calculated in the given conditions. Climbers must take into account the ice formation, the quality of the ice and any sunlight or water ingress. Although we do most of the route planning at our desks, we are well advised to take the current conditions into account straight away so that the adventure doesn’t end at the foot of the waterfall ice formation and everyone has to turn back. Once we reach the formation, we have to reassess, choose our tactics and then it’s off we go:

the motto is to work cleanly with ice tools and crampons.

Belays not only have to be set up correctly, but also placed according to the icefall delta and climbing direction. It is also important to stay dry and avoid getting cold feet and fingers.

Focal points:

  • Assessment of ice quality and ice formation (ISM method)
  • Improving climbing technique, climbing on vertical ice
  • Lead climbing, lead climbing training, half rope technique
  • Rope team sequence (ascent and descent/when abseiling)
  • Stand construction (series connection, fixed equalization)
  • Belaying second climbers and first climbers from the fixed point
  • Insight into rescue technology
  • Tour planning and avalanche awareness

Optionally incl. 2xovernight stay+breakfast+packed lunch at Basecamp Gramais

  • Arrival and check-in on the evening before the first day of training
  • Overnight stay per person per night € 51,00
  • Breakfast + packed lunch per day € 20.00 (includes packed lunch for the climbing day)

The Basecamp Gramais is less than a 5-minute walk from our three practice ice climbing walls.
Two other areas can be reached within approx. 40 minutes (flat approach with snowshoes).
Another 2 areas are located in alpine terrain and can be reached within approx. 80 minutes from the base camp. Here we use our Siberian huskies for support on the approach.
